Cultural Awareness Training

The MIC has held a number of cross cultural awareness training sessions. An example of participant evaluation of some of these sessions are detailed below.

Dementia and Culture Education Project

The training package on " Dementia and Culture" has been designed to strengthen the capacity /skills of aged care service providers in the EMR to work successfully with people with dementia from CALD backgrounds and their family members. Please click here to read the evaluation results

 

South Sudanese Families-A Cross Cultural Training Program for Service Providers

The aim of the training is to increase understanding of

-Relationships within families
-Cultural values and parental expectations of their children
-Cultural conflicts between generations
-Appropriate work practices

CE PCP 'CALD Communities Project" Cultural Planning Training Program

This program consisted of 8 training sessions held over 9 weeks from late
March through to late June 2003.

The aim of the program was to enhance the capacity of health and community
agencies to more effectively meet the needs of Culturally and Linguistically
Diverse (CALD) communities. The sessions were free of charge. A total of 155 participants from 52 different agencies attended the training.

Communities Together

Communities Together aimed to increase community understanding of Australian Muslims through information about Islam and why it is so misunderstood today. The events showed the positive contributions Australian Muslims make to the community and provided an opportunity for Muslim and Non Muslim families to meet and to socialise together.
The event included speakers, a fine art exhibition, henna body art and Arabic calligraphy showcasing the cultural contribution of Muslims in Australia. Lunch will be provided.

Chinese Family Day

The MIC held a Chinese Family Health Day on 28th June 2003 at the Nunawading Sports and Recreation Centre, Silver Grove, Nunawading. The day included speakers on healthy eating and services for the Chinese community as well as a badminton competition for the whole family and lunch.

EMPLOYMENT SEMINAR

The MIC held a forum for the Iranian and Afganistan community on how to find work, where to look for jobs and employee rights and obligations in the workforce. The speaker was Mike Layne from Spectrum Employment.

MIC TRAINING NEEDS ANALYSIS AND TRAINING EVALUATION OF ETHNO SPECIFIC AGENCIES

The Migrant Information Centre (MIC) received funding from Department of Human Services Eastern Region to manage a project, which would promote access and equity to HACC services by people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds in the Eastern Region.

The objectives of the project were:

-To enhance the capacity of agencies to access funding
-To assist agencies to understand the Home And Community Care sector
-To assist agencies build networks and partnerships in the region

HACC Training Needs Analysis and Training Evaluation of Ethno Specific Agencies

Health Information Forums

The objectives of the Health Information Forums was to:

-Provide information on health related issues for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
-Promote healthy lives and healthy diet.

Cross-Cultural Training

-To increase cultural awareness in service planning and delivery.

Multicultural Recruitment Information Day at Whitehorse

The objectives of the Information Day was to:
- Provide information on employment and volunteer opportunities for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in the delivery of Home and Community Care (HACC) services.
- Link HACC service providers with potential CALD workers and/or volunteers.
- Promote culturally appropriate HACC services.
