Cultural Partnerships for Harmony

The Cultural Partnerships for Harmony project worked with the Chin, Karen, Afghan, Iranian, African and mainstream communities. The purpose of the project was to identify issues of racism and intolerance and to work in partnership with local and state government and community organisations to develop local strategies to address them.

One of the program activities developed a collection of recipes from different communities living in the Eastern Region of Melbourne. The cultures represented in the Cultural Recipe Book are Afghan, Karen, Bangladesh, Pakistani, German, Sudanese and Anglo-Australia. The book includes photos of people from newly arrived cultural groups in Eastern Melbourne, descriptions of the food and their cultural significance as well as a world map indicating the location of the countries.

2010

Dementia Awareness in CALD Communities across the Generations

Funded by the Department of Health and Ageing in 2010, the Dementia Awareness in CALD Communities Project aimed to raise awareness amongst young people from CALD backgrounds about dementia and how it may affect older people in the community. The project included information sessions and activities for English as a Second Language (ESL) secondary students about dementia; Visits to dementia specific aged care services for ESL secondary students;Linking ESL secondary students with members from CALD senior citizens clubs to present and share what they have learnt about dementia. Cultural Planning Tool Report 2010 - Multicultural Equity & Access Program

As part of the Multicultural Equity and Access Program, the Migrant Information Centre collected, collated and analysed the Cultural Action Plans of HACC funded agencies in the Eastern Metropolitan Region. Inner East Social Inclusion Initiative - Mobilising Communities

The Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Region) received funding from the Department of Planning and Community Development and Inner East Primary Care Partnership to work with the Cambodian community in the inner eastern areas of Boroondara, Manningham, Monash and Whitehorse. The project aimed to reduce the social isolation of older people from Cambodian background.

2009

CALD Mental Health & Wellbeing Program Trainers Manual

The Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Region) received funding from the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs to provide the CALD Mental Health and Wellbeing Program (CALD Wellbeing Program) which aimed to promote mental health amongst newly arrived migrant and refugee students in Melbourne's Eastern Region.

This manual has been developed from the CALD Wellbeing Program as a resource to Secondary and ESL teachers and youth workers working with CALD young people, especially refugee youth, to help these students develop an understanding of mental health and mental illness, including risk and protective factors.

The objectives of the CALD Wellbeing Project were:
" Improved mental health literacy and strategies amongst participants and teachers
" Greater access for CALD youth to local services and
" Increase in helping behaviours of participants

Eastern Refugee Pathways Project Final Report

The Eastern Refugee Pathways Project (ERPP) provided support to newly arrived and refugee students within secondary schools, their families and teachers in the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) of Victoria. The project's aim was to develop realistic education and career pathways for these students through individual pathway planning, student and parent information sessions and regular meetings with school staff. The project's steering committee had representatives from Local Learning and Employment Networks (Gateways and Outer Eastern), DEECD, (regional and central offices), Foundation House, Eastern Industry Education Partnership, Blackburn English Language School and School Focused Youth Services

Family violence within the Southern Sudanese community Project Evaluation Report

In 2007 and 2008, the Migrant Information Centre (MIC) carried out a program with the Southern Sudanese community in Eastern Melbourne to develop and implement culturally appropriate prevention and intervention family violence approaches. The project used an action research and community development model to achieve this, regularly consulting and working alongside two critical reference groups (comprised of Southern Sudanese men and women), community elders and leaders and representatives from local community services. Palliative Care for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities

Healthy Living In Australia

The Healthy Living in Australia booklet is a 44 page pictorial guide to living healthily in Australia. The booklet has been designed as a guide to assist people living in Australia llead a healthy lifestyle. The information included is of greatest benefit if delivered in conjunction with practical education and skill development activities such as cooking demonstrations and supermarket tours.

The resource is based on foods readily available in Australia to assist newly arrived community members as well as the broader community, make healthy food choices in Australia. The resource or sections of the resource can easily be adapted by professionals to include cultural foods of individual communities that also provide healthy food choices. The guide covers a range of topics including breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, dental care, physical activity and much more.

Calendar of Cultural and Religious Dates

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship has a calender of cultural and religious dates available on their web site. This document details the settlement by country of birth, local government area and migration stream in the Eastern Region for the five years ending June 2008.

Living in Harmony Youth and Media Project Training Manual

This manual was developed from a pilot program funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to the Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) in 2007. The project was designed as a response to the impact of world events on young people from non Anglo/Saxon backgrounds who expressed frustration that media was quick to identify race and/or ethnicity in reporting crime or negative events in the community.

The program included training young people from a range of cultural backgrounds to organise a presentation/forum for others (youth groups, local forums, churches, mosques, etc.) on how to analyse media reports and constructively respond to negative images of ethnic groups in the media. The manual details the activities that were used to train the young people.

Eastern Refugee Pathways Project - This report details a pilot project that was offered ito refugee young people attending three secondary schools in the Eastern Region. The objective of the pilot project was to provide additional support to refugee students within secondary schools, their families and teachers in developing realistic education and career pathways for these students through individual pathway planning sessions, student and parent information sessions and regular meetings with school staff.

Community Profiles

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship have developed community profiles on 10 communities - Bhutanese, Burmese, Congolese, Eritrean, Ethiopian, Liberian, Sierra Leonean, Sudanese, Togolesee and Jzbek. The profiles have information on where communities are settling, demographics, likely settlement needs and cultural and country backgrounds. To access the profiles please click here.

2007

Family Relationships Skills Program for Southern Sudananese Young Men - A Therapeutic Approach - This report details an eight week young men's program that was offered through the "Family Relationships Services for Humanitarian Entrants Program". This group therapy program was developed to support young Sudanese men to strengthen their understanding of family relationships and their leadership skills. This report is an outline, analysis and evaluation of the program.

Outer Eastern Voices DVD

The Outer Eastern Voices DVD was made by young people from a number of different cultural and religious backgrounds living in the Outer Eastern Region of Melbourne. In the DVD the young people talk about their lives and experience of living in the area. The project was funded by Vic Health. Access & Support Pilot Project Report - A report on the EMR HACC Access & Support Pilot Project implementation and evaluation. This project was managed by the Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) and funded through EMR DHS HACC and Inner East PCP. The Project aimed to develop and pilot a model of access and support for people from CALD backgrounds in Manningham, Monash and Whitehorse Councils to assist with accessing and remaining engaged with HACC services.

Dementia and Culture Information Sheet (2007) - The information sheet provides practical suggestions on how to incorporate cultural factors when planning services for peopel with dementia from CALD backgrounds.

Finding a Home - A Research Report on Supporting Newly Arrived Migrants and Refugees to Secure Housing (2007). The report outlines the findings on consultations with newly arrived communities and real estate agents and provides directions for community education programs to increase community understanding of housing in Victoria and the process for obtaining and maintaining private rental housing, education programs for real estate agents and a service model for assisting newly arrived migrants and refugees to secure private rental housing.

EMR Cultural Planning Tool Action Plan January 2007 Report (Jan 2007) - The reports provide a showcase of strategies implemented across EMR and to provide ideas and examples for agencies in planning and implementing their CPT action plans.

2006

Home and Community Care Services and Volunteers from Diverse Cultural Backgrounds (2006): The project was a joint initiative between MIC and the Eastern Volunteer Recruitment Project and the project was to develop an understanding of volunteering in mainstream HACC organisations by members of CALD communities.

Therapeutic Group for Sudanese Men - "Round Fire Discussion Group" (2006): This report details an eight week men's program that was offered through "Family Relationships Services for Humanitarian Entrants Program". This group therapy program was developed to support Sudanese men to strengthen family relationships. This report is an outline, analysis and evaluation of the program.

Meeting Needs:Perceptions on Respite (2006): This is a summary document of key findings from the CALD Respite Information Project. This report outlines findings from consultations with respite service providers in the EMR, and with three target community groups: Chinese, Indian and Sri Lankan, in order to better understand the community perceptions of respite care. CONNECT Activity Folder (2006)

Annual Report 2005 2006

Knox Islamic Youth Project (2006) This project was funded by the Knox City Council to provide a series of activities and information sessions for Muslim young people living in the City of Knox. This paper reports on the development and implementation of the program.

Understading Money in Australia (June 2006)- The MIC in partnership with Eastern Access Community Health developed flyers for the Sudanese community that provide information about borrowing money, buying a car, paying bills and understanding direct debit options. The flyers are available in Dinka, English, Nuer and Sudanese Arabic. The project was funded by the Consumer Credit Fund on the approval of the Minister for Consumer Affair. Using ATM's (June 2006) - The MIC in partnership with Eastern Access Community Health developed wallet for the Sudanese community that provide information on how to use ATMS. The wallet cards are available in Dinka, English, Nuer and Sudanese Arabic. The project was funded by the Consumer Credit Fund on the approval of the Minister for Consumer Affair. Southern Sudanese Youth Group (August 2006)- a report detailing a therapeutic group approach fro supporting young men to adjust to the new cultural environment in Australia. The program, held in partnerhsip with Anglicare Meridian, aimed to provide a safe group forum for young men from Sudanese backgrounds to discuss their experiences as refugees both overseas and in Australia as well as settlement issues and to develop strategies for adjusting to their new cultural environment in Australia.

Eastern Multicultural News (2006) - The Health and Aged Care and Youth and Family Support Working Groups at MIC has identified the need for a news bulletin that facilitates information sharing between agencies and programs on new programs and project initiatives for culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The MIC is able to develop and distribute a news bulletin entitled "Eastern Multicultural News" on a monthly basis.

2005

CEGS Recruitment Project Report (December 2005) - The aim of the Culturally Equitable Gateway Strategy (CEGS) Recruitment Project was to explore a range of factors pertaining to effective recruitment and retention of CALD Home and Community Care (HACC) workers within the City Councils of Monash, Manningham and Whitehorse. The project involved a review of relevant literature and an analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. Information was collected through a staff survey distributed to all HACC workers (across the three city councils), individual consultations, and staff and client focus groups.

City of Whitehorse Youth Project - Increasing Access to Sport and Recreational Clubs in Whitehorse by Young People from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds. (October 2005) The report details the findings of research the MIC undertook on strategies to increase access and participation in local sports clubs of young people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

My Dress, My Image, My Choice Evaluation Report (October 2005) - Bringing Muslim and Non-Muslim women together. MIC received support from DIMIA Living in Harmony Initiative to hold three events to celebrate Harmony Day and to promote harmony and tolerance within the community.

Transport Resource Kit for HACC organisations & CALD communities (July 2005) - A practical Guide to provide information about transport options exist in the Eastern Metropolitan Region for HACC consumers.

Review of the EMR HACC CALD Network (May 2005) - The EMR HACC CALD Network has been in operation since June 2001. The review was to identify network strengths and areas to enhance its ability to support culturally responsive services.

One Community, Many Voices - The Diversity and Needs of the Sri Lankan Community in the City of Monash. (February 2005) A research report on the range of issues impacting on the settlement of migrants and refugees from Sri Lanka.

2004

Multicultural Education Project Evaluation Report (December 2004) - The MEP aimed to provide resources to HACC organisations responsible for the delivery of home and personal care services to develop systems that would enhance their service delivery to people from CALD backgrounds. The report evaluated the achievements and results of the project.

Communties Together - A Model for Promoting Harmony and Understanding of Australian Muslims (September 2004)

Home and Personal Care Services Guide (October 2004) - A practical Guide to delivering culturally appropriate home and personal care services to CALD clients. Strategies to promote these services to CALD communities and the recruitment of CALD workers are detailed.

Home and Personal Care Kit (October 2004) - Cultural and Religious Profiles to assist home and personal care workers in providing culturally sensitive care and effective communication (including cultural & religion fact sheets).

Southern Sudan Profile: A background paper on the history and ethnicity of people from Southern Sudan

Southern Sudanese Family Structure (September 2004) A paper written on the family structures of Southern Sudanese communities for Southern Sudanese Cross Cultural Training provided by the MIC.

Consultations on Disability Services for CALD Communities (Sept 2004) Consultations on understanding disability services with CALD communities were initiated to provide opportunities for services providers to make contact with the communities directly and to obtain feedback from the communities to begin a process to understand their needs.

Access to Mainstream Services by Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities in Manningham, Whitehorse and Knox (August 2004) - This project assessed the level of usage of mainstream services by CALD communities in Manningham, Whitehorse and Knox. It identified factors that affect access to those services and strategies to address those factors. The Executive Summary of the report is also available by clicking Executive Summary.

Planned Activity Group Cultural Model Pilot Evaluation Report (June 2004) - The report evaluated the planned activity group cultural model. The PAG Cultural Model aims to develop, implement and evaluate an alternative option for the planning and delivery of PAG for people from CALD backgrounds. The pilot agencies included East Burwood Centre, Centre for Philippine Concerns, City of Whitehorse and Cambodian Community Welfare Centre.

EMR Cultural Planning Tool Action Plan Septmember 2004 Report (November 2004) and EMR CPT Action Plan 2001-2003 Analysis Report (May 2004) - The reports provide a showcase of strategies implemented across EMR and to provide ideas and examples for agencies in planning and implementing their CPT action plans.

Working in Home & Community Care in the Eastern Region (April 2004) - This booklet provides information on the type of work available in Home & Community Care, the qualifications required, how to apply for positions and what you can expect should you decide to work in this field.

2003

The Needs of Muslims Families in the Rowville Lysterfield Area (September 2003). A report funded by the Knox City Council to identify the needs of Muslim families in the Rowville/Lysterfield area.

Healthy Families Here and Now (July 2003) A report on the impact of migration on the emotional wellbeing of migrants and refugees in Manningham.

Manningham Youth Project (July 2003) A framework for Youth Services and Recreation Clubs to Measure "Youth Friendliness" and "Cultural Appropriateness"

Cultural Planning Framework & Resource Kit (May 2003) This document provides practical suggestions and tools for agencies to assist with planning for culturally relevant services. It also includes links to websites containing translated material and further information. This kit will be updated on a regular basis, however, please inform us of any changes or additional information to be included.

2002

Supporting Vietnamese Families (October 2002) A report on the development of a culturally appropriate service model for implementation by family support agencies to increase access to services by Vietnamese families in the City of Whitehorse

Demographics of the Eastern Region (September 2002) The 2001 Census figures for the Eastern Region for language and country of birth by age. 1996 Census, 1999, 2000, 2001 DIMIA, AMES and ACFE data for the Eastern Region and Local Government area.

Communication Strategy for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Background Communities (September 2002) The Communication Strategy was developed to increase the knowledge and understanding of Home and Community Care (HACC) services by people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. The strategy detailed in the report identifies a step by step guide to implementation as well as where agencies can receive assistance and resources to support implementation.

CONNECT Evaluation Report of Pilot Project (September 2002) CONNECT a school based pilot project funded by VicHealth operated in the Eastern Region between January 2001 and July 2002. The project provided practical assistance through secondary schools to increase the social connectedness of newly arrived young people and their parents from migrant and refugee backgrounds. This report evaluates this pilot project. The project is continuing with further funding from VicHealth.

The Ethno-Specific Group Directory in the Eastern Region is initiated by the Eastern Region HACC CALD Network and is developed by the MIC. The Directory is organised by language spoken. This directory lists most of the migrant groups in the Eastern Region, the information is updated yearly.
