Demographics of
the Eastern Region
ABS Census 2001
The ABS Census 2001 found that 20% (186,963)
people living in the Eastern Region speak a language other
than English at home. One hundred and fifty one different
langauges are spoken across the Region by people born in over
190 different countries. The largest number of people who
speak a language other than English at home speak Greek (33,290)
followed by Cantonese (27908), Italian (24948), Mandarin (17493),
German (6206) Vietnamese (5816) and Arabic (5145).

ABS Census 1996
The 1996 Census
figures showed that 167,750 (19.5% of the region's population)
were from non-English speaking backgrounds. Major languages
spoken in the region include Cantonese, Mandarin and Arabic.
In addition there are a number of people who have recently
settled in the area who speak Farsi and Dari as well languages
from the former Yugoslavia. There are also significant Vietnamese,
Khmer and Lao speaking communities and older, more established
communities including Italian, Greek, Hungarian, German, Dutch
and Armenian communities.
